Battery Storage and Traveling With BatteriesUpdated 15 days ago

At-Home Storage

  • Always store spare batteries in a dedicated plastic battery case — never loose in a drawer, pocket, or bag where metal objects can cause a short circuit.
  • Store at room temperature. Avoid hot areas (car glove compartments in summer, near heat sources) and very cold areas.
  • Keep away from moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Store batteries at approximately 50% charge for long-term storage (if you won't be using them for weeks or months).
  • Keep batteries in matched pairs if using a dual battery mod — store them together and use them together.

Inspecting Batteries Before Storage

  • Check wraps for tears or damage before putting batteries away. A damaged wrap is a safety hazard — rewrap or replace before storing.
  • Check for dents, bulging, or corrosion. Damaged batteries should not be stored — dispose of them properly.

Traveling With Batteries — Airline Rules

Lithium batteries have specific rules when flying:

  • Carry-on only: Lithium batteries (including in vape devices) must be in carry-on luggage. They are NOT allowed in checked baggage.
  • Quantity limits: You can carry up to two spare lithium-ion batteries over 100Wh (most 18650s are around 50Wh so this usually isn't an issue).
  • Terminal protection: Spare batteries must have terminals protected — use a battery case or apply tape to the terminals.
  • In devices: Batteries installed in your vape device can travel in carry-on.

Traveling With E-Liquid

  • TSA allows e-liquid in carry-on in containers up to 100ml (3.4oz) — the standard liquids rule applies.
  • Fill bottles only 80% full when flying — pressure changes can cause leaking.
  • Keep e-liquid in a sealed plastic bag in your carry-on.

International Travel

Vaping regulations vary significantly by country. Before traveling internationally with vaping equipment, research the laws in your destination. Some countries prohibit vaping products entirely. SmokTek is not responsible for vaping products confiscated by customs or border authorities.
