Understanding Nicotine StrengthsUpdated 15 days ago

Why Nicotine Strength Matters

Too little nicotine and you'll find yourself vaping constantly without satisfaction. Too much and you'll feel dizzy or nauseous. Getting the right level from the start is key to a successful switch from smoking.

Standard Nicotine E-Liquids (Freebase Nicotine)

Standard e-liquids use freebase nicotine. These are used in most tanks, pod systems, and sub-ohm devices.

  • 0mg — Nicotine-free. For those who have stepped down completely or just enjoy vaping for the flavor and experience.
  • 3mg — Very light. Good for heavy vapers or those using high-powered sub-ohm devices that produce a lot of vapor.
  • 6mg — Light to moderate. The most popular strength for pod system users and moderate smokers making the switch.
  • 12mg — Moderate. Good for former half-pack-per-day smokers using lower-powered devices.
  • 18mg — Strong. Suited for heavier smokers using low-wattage, mouth-to-lung devices.
  • 24mg — Very strong. For heavy smokers using very low-power devices. Not recommended for sub-ohm vaping.

Nicotine Salt E-Liquids

Nicotine salts (nic salts) use a different form of nicotine that delivers a smoother throat hit even at high concentrations. They're designed specifically for low-wattage pod systems.

  • 25mg — Moderate nic salt strength. Smooth and satisfying for most former smokers.
  • 50mg — High nic salt strength. Best for heavy smokers who find lower strengths unsatisfying.

Important: Never use nicotine salt e-liquids in high-powered sub-ohm devices — the nicotine delivery will be too intense.

Quick Guide by Smoking History

  • Less than 5 cigarettes/day: 3mg–6mg freebase or 25mg nic salt in a pod system.
  • Half pack per day (10 cigarettes): 6mg–12mg freebase or 25mg–35mg nic salt.
  • Pack per day (20 cigarettes): 12mg–18mg freebase or 35mg–50mg nic salt.
  • More than a pack per day: 18mg–24mg freebase or 50mg nic salt.
