Understanding PG and VG in E-LiquidsUpdated 15 days ago
What Are PG and VG?
Almost all e-liquids are made with two base liquids: Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). The ratio of these two ingredients significantly affects your vaping experience.
Propylene Glycol (PG)
- Thin, runny liquid — almost water-like.
- Carries flavor more effectively than VG — higher PG means stronger flavor.
- Produces the "throat hit" that feels similar to smoking.
- Produces less visible vapor.
- Absorbs into coils quickly — good for smaller coils and pod systems.
- Some people are sensitive or mildly allergic to PG — if you notice throat irritation that doesn't improve, try a higher VG liquid.
Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
- Thick, slightly sweet liquid — much more viscous than PG.
- Produces large, dense vapor clouds.
- Smoother on the throat — less throat hit.
- Slightly sweet taste that can affect flavor clarity.
- Slower to absorb into coils — better suited for larger coils in sub-ohm tanks.
Common PG/VG Ratios and What They're Good For
- 50/50 (balanced): Good throat hit, good flavor, moderate vapor. Excellent for pod systems, mouth-to-lung tanks, and beginner devices. This is what most of our standard SmokEjuice line uses.
- 70VG/30PG: More vapor, smoother hit, slightly less flavor intensity. Good for sub-ohm tanks and direct-lung devices.
- 80VG/20PG or Max VG: Maximum cloud production. Best for large sub-ohm coils only — too thick for most pod systems.
Which Ratio Is Right for Your Device?
- Pod kits and mouth-to-lung tanks: 50/50 or 60VG/40PG. High VG liquids are too thick and can cause dry hits and leaking.
- Sub-ohm tanks and direct-lung devices: 70VG/30PG or higher.
- Disposable vapes: Pre-filled with the correct ratio — no choice needed.
SmokEjuice Ratios
Our SmokEjuice standard line uses a balanced ratio designed to work well across all device types. We also carry select flavors in higher VG blends for sub-ohm vapers. If you're not sure which is right for your device, contact us at [email protected].
