Disposing of Used Vapes and Batteries ResponsiblyUpdated 15 days ago

Why Proper Disposal Matters

All vape devices — disposable or otherwise — contain lithium-ion batteries. Lithium batteries should never go in household trash or recycling bins. When crushed in garbage trucks or waste facilities, they can cause fires. Proper disposal protects the environment and keeps waste facilities safe.

How to Dispose of Disposable Vapes

  1. Use it completely first: Make sure the device is fully used before disposal.
  2. Find a battery recycling location: Many electronics retailers (Best Buy, Staples, Home Depot) accept lithium batteries for recycling at no charge.
  3. Earth911: Visit earth911.com and search "lithium battery" with your zip code to find the nearest recycling location.
  4. Vape shop drop-offs: Some vape shops accept used devices for proper disposal — ask at your local store.
  5. Call2Recycle: Call2Recycle.org has a drop-off locator for battery recycling across the US.

How to Dispose of Removable Batteries

18650, 21700, and other removable vape batteries should be recycled at the same battery recycling locations listed above. Place each battery in a separate plastic bag or apply tape to the terminals before disposing to prevent short-circuiting during transport.

How to Dispose of Old Vape Devices

Old tanks, mods, and chargers can often be recycled as e-waste. Check with your local municipality for e-waste recycling events or permanent drop-off locations. Many electronics retailers also accept e-waste.

Never Do This

  • Never put vape devices or batteries in regular household trash.
  • Never put batteries in standard curbside recycling bins.
  • Never attempt to disassemble a battery.
  • Never put batteries in a fire.
