Making the Switch from Smoking to VapingUpdated 15 days ago

What to Expect in the First Week

Switching from cigarettes to vaping is a significant change for your body. The first week can feel different in several ways — this is normal and typically temporary.

  • Coughing: Some new vapers cough initially. This often happens because vaping uses different muscles and inhalation techniques than smoking. It usually subsides within a few days.
  • Dry mouth or throat: PG in e-liquid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture. Drink more water than usual, especially in the first week.
  • Mouth sores: Some people experience temporary mouth irritation as their body adjusts. This typically resolves within 1–2 weeks.
  • Cravings: If you're not getting enough nicotine, you'll still crave cigarettes. This usually means your nicotine strength needs to go up, not that vaping isn't working.

Inhaling Technique — Mouth to Lung vs. Direct Lung

Most smokers are used to mouth-to-lung (MTL) inhaling — drawing vapor into your mouth first, then inhaling to your lungs. This is what most pod kits and starter kits are designed for, and it feels most similar to smoking.

Direct-lung (DL) inhaling — breathing vapor directly into the lungs like a deep breath — is used with sub-ohm devices and produces larger clouds but feels very different from smoking. Not recommended for new vapers switching from cigarettes.

Getting the Nicotine Level Right

This is the most critical factor in a successful switch. If you still crave cigarettes after vaping, your nicotine level is probably too low. Don't be afraid to go up a strength. You can always step down later once you've successfully moved away from cigarettes.

Tips for Success

  • Keep your vape device charged and your pod filled at all times — running out at a craving moment leads back to cigarettes.
  • Don't try to cut nicotine too quickly at first. Focus on stopping smoking first, then worry about nicotine reduction later.
  • Try different flavors — finding flavors you genuinely enjoy makes vaping more satisfying as a substitute.
  • Some people do best going cold turkey from cigarettes on day one. Others reduce gradually. Do what works for you.
  • Be patient — most people find the transition much easier after the first 2–3 weeks.
