What Does Wattage Do?

Wattage determines how much power is sent to your coil. More power means more heat, which means more vapor and more intense flavor. Too little power and the coil can't vaporize liquid efficiently. Too much power and you'll burn the coil and get a harsh, unpleasant taste.

How to Find the Right Wattage

Every coil has a recommended wattage range printed on its side or packaging. This is your starting point. For example, a coil rated for 30–60W should be used within that range.

Always start at the lower end of the range and work up gradually. Take a few puffs at the low setting, assess the vapor and flavor, then increase by 5W at a time until you find your sweet spot.

Signs Your Wattage Is Too Low

  • Weak, thin vapor production.
  • Muted or underwhelming flavor.
  • Gurgling sound — liquid isn't being vaporized efficiently.

Signs Your Wattage Is Too High

  • Burnt or harsh taste.
  • Excessive heat from the device or tank.
  • Dry hits even with a full tank.
  • Coils burning out faster than expected.

Wattage and E-Liquid VG/PG

Higher wattage settings work best with higher-VG e-liquids that can handle the heat without becoming too thin. At lower wattages (under 20W), balanced PG/VG works well. At higher wattages (40W+), 70VG/30PG or higher is recommended.

Wattage and Nicotine

Higher wattage produces more vapor per puff, delivering more nicotine per draw. If you move from a low-wattage pod kit to a high-wattage box mod, you should drop your nicotine strength significantly — often from 6mg to 3mg or even 1.5mg. Never use nicotine salts in high-wattage sub-ohm devices.

Temperature Control Mode

Many advanced mods offer temperature control (TC) mode as an alternative to wattage mode. TC monitors the coil temperature directly and cuts power before it can burn — useful for preventing dry hits. TC requires specific coil materials (nickel, titanium, or stainless steel) that are compatible with TC mode. Not all coils support TC.
