Burnt Taste — Causes and How to Fix ItUpdated 15 days ago

Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

A burnt taste is the most common complaint vapers experience and almost always comes down to one of these causes. The good news is most are easy to fix.

Cause 1 — Dry or Unprimed Coil

This is the most common cause, especially with a new coil or pod. The cotton wicking material inside the coil needs to be fully saturated with e-liquid before you vape.

Fix: Fill your tank or pod and let it sit for 5–10 minutes before vaping. Take 3–4 gentle puffs without pressing the fire button to help draw liquid into the coil. Start at a lower wattage and gradually increase.

Cause 2 — Coil Needs Replacing

Coils don't last forever. Over time the cotton burns out and the metal degrades, causing a harsh burnt taste even with a full tank.

Signs your coil needs replacing: persistent burnt taste even with a full tank, reduced vapor production, gurgling or leaking that wasn't there before, dark brown or black discoloration visible in the coil window.

Fix: Replace the coil. We carry replacement coils for Aspire Nautilus, GeekVape Zeus, Kanger, Vaporesso, SMOK, Joyetech, and Eleaf devices.

Cause 3 — Wattage Too High

Running your device at a wattage higher than your coil is rated for will burn the cotton faster than e-liquid can re-saturate it.

Fix: Check the wattage range printed on the side of your coil and stay within that range. Start at the lower end and work up gradually.

Cause 4 — Chain Vaping

Taking puff after puff without a break doesn't give the wick time to re-absorb e-liquid between hits.

Fix: Wait 20–30 seconds between puffs to allow the wick to re-saturate.

Cause 5 — Low E-Liquid Level

Vaping with a nearly empty tank or pod exposes the coil to air instead of liquid — this burns the cotton quickly.

Fix: Always keep your tank or pod at least 25% full. Refill before it runs completely dry.

Cause 6 — High VG E-Liquid in the Wrong Device

Very high VG e-liquids (80%+ VG) are thick and slow to absorb into coils. In pod systems and mouth-to-lung tanks this can cause dry hits and burnt taste.

Fix: Use a balanced PG/VG ratio e-liquid in pod systems. Save high-VG liquids for sub-ohm tanks with larger coil openings. Our SmokEjuice standard line is formulated to work well across all device types.
