Device Is Getting Hot — Is That Normal?Updated 15 days ago

Some Heat Is Normal

All vaping devices generate heat — that's how they vaporize e-liquid. A warm device after extended use is completely normal. Here's how to tell the difference between normal warmth and a problem.

Normal Heat

  • The tank, coil area, or drip tip feels warm or hot after several draws — this is expected.
  • The device body feels slightly warm after extended use.
  • Heat that dissipates quickly when you stop vaping.

Abnormal Heat — Take Action

  • The battery or mod body gets very hot even with minimal use.
  • Heat is coming from the battery compartment rather than the tank/coil area.
  • The device is hot to the touch immediately after turning it on.
  • You smell burning plastic or chemicals.
  • The battery is swelling, venting, or making unusual sounds.

If any of the above apply, stop using the device immediately. Remove the battery if possible and place the device in a safe, open area away from flammable materials.

Common Causes of Overheating

  • Chain vaping: Taking continuous puffs without breaks pushes the coil and battery harder than they're designed for. Take breaks between sessions.
  • Wattage too high: Running above the coil's rated wattage generates excess heat. Stay within the recommended range.
  • Damaged battery: A battery with a torn wrap, dents, or past its lifespan can overheat. Replace damaged batteries immediately.
  • Short circuit: If your mod displays a short circuit warning, stop using it and check the coil and 510 connection.
  • Blocked airflow: Restricted airflow makes the coil work harder and run hotter.

Battery Safety

Lithium battery safety is serious. Always use high-quality IMR batteries (Efest, Imren, Blackcell) from a reputable source. Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight. Store batteries in a protective case away from heat and metal objects.
