E-Liquid Safety — Handling and Child SafetyUpdated 15 days ago

Nicotine Is Toxic — Handle With Care

E-liquid containing nicotine is toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin in significant quantities. This is not meant to alarm you — normal, careful use is completely safe — but it's important to understand the risks and handle e-liquid responsibly.

Safe Handling Practices

  • Wash your hands after handling e-liquid, especially if any gets on your skin.
  • If you spill e-liquid on your skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water immediately.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth after handling e-liquid before washing your hands.
  • Never transfer e-liquid into unlabeled containers — always keep it in its original labeled bottle.

Child Safety — This Is Critical

Children are significantly more vulnerable to nicotine toxicity than adults due to their smaller body weight. Even a small amount of concentrated e-liquid can be dangerous if ingested by a child.

  • Always use child-resistant caps — and make sure they're properly engaged after each use.
  • Store all e-liquid in a locked cabinet or location completely out of reach of children.
  • Never leave open bottles unattended around children.
  • Treat e-liquid with the same security as medications.

Accidental Ingestion

If a child or adult ingests e-liquid, call Poison Control immediately:

US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222

Have the bottle available to read the nicotine concentration to the operator. Do not induce vomiting unless directed by Poison Control or a medical professional.

Pet Safety

E-liquid is toxic to pets as well — especially cats and dogs. Store e-liquid where pets cannot access it. If a pet ingests e-liquid, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 immediately.

Skin and Eye Contact

  • Skin: Wash affected area thoroughly with soap and water. Nicotine can be absorbed through the skin — extended skin contact should be avoided.
  • Eyes: Rinse with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
