Why Is My New Coil Burnt? — Troubleshooting New Coil IssuesUpdated 15 days ago

A Burnt New Coil Is Almost Always a Priming Issue

If your brand new coil tastes burnt from the first puff, the overwhelmingly likely cause is that the cotton wasn't fully saturated with e-liquid before you fired it. This burns the dry cotton and permanently damages the coil from the first use.

The Fix — Proper Priming (For Next Time)

  1. Before installing the coil, put 2–3 drops of e-liquid directly onto each wicking port on the side of the coil and 1–2 drops down the center.
  2. Install the coil, fill the tank, and let it sit upright for a minimum of 10 minutes — 15–20 minutes is better.
  3. Take 3–5 dry puffs (without pressing fire) to draw liquid up into the coil.
  4. Start at the lower end of your wattage range for the first 5–10 puffs before increasing.

Can a Burnt New Coil Be Saved?

Unfortunately, no. Once the cotton has been burnt, the damage is permanent. The burnt cotton will continue to produce a harsh, unpleasant taste regardless of how much e-liquid you add. You'll need to replace it with a new coil and prime it properly this time.

Other Possible Causes of a Bad-Tasting New Coil

  • Manufacturing defect: Rare but it happens. If you've primed correctly and still get a burnt taste from multiple puffs on a new coil, it may be defective. Contact us for a replacement.
  • Wrong coil for the wattage: If you're running above the coil's maximum rated wattage, you can burn a coil even with proper priming.
  • Residue from packaging: Some coils have a slight off taste for the first few puffs due to manufacturing residue. This is different from a burnt taste — it should clear up within 5–10 puffs.
  • Wrong e-liquid type: Very high VG liquids in small coils won't wick fast enough and cause dry hits even with proper priming.
