Tanks — Complete Guide to Vape TanksUpdated 15 days ago
What Is a Vape Tank?
A vape tank is the component that screws onto a box mod (via the 510 connector), holds your e-liquid, and houses the coil. Unlike pods (which are designed for pod systems), tanks are typically larger, hold more liquid, and are designed for use with more powerful devices.
Types of Vape Tanks
Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) Tanks
Designed for a tight, cigarette-like draw where you first draw vapor into your mouth, then inhale. Features:
- Tighter airflow — more restrictive draw.
- Higher resistance coils (above 1 ohm typically).
- Lower wattage requirement (10–25W typically).
- Better suited for balanced PG/VG e-liquids.
- More nicotine-efficient — works well at higher mg levels.
- Best example: Aspire Nautilus series.
Sub-Ohm Tanks (Direct Lung)
Designed for large, direct lung draws producing substantial vapor clouds. Features:
- Wide, open airflow.
- Low resistance coils (below 1 ohm).
- Higher wattage requirement (30–100W+).
- Best with high-VG e-liquids (70VG/30PG or higher).
- Lower nicotine concentrations recommended (3mg–6mg).
- Examples: GeekVape Zeus, Eleaf Melo 4S.
Rebuildable Tanks (RTA/RDA)
Advanced tanks where you build and wick your own coils from wire and cotton. Highest performance potential but requires knowledge and time. Not recommended for beginners.
Top Fill vs. Bottom Fill
- Top fill: Open the top of the tank to fill. More convenient — no need to remove the tank from the mod. The modern standard.
- Bottom fill: Older design requiring you to remove and flip the tank. Less common today.
Tank Capacity
Most tanks hold between 2ml and 8ml of e-liquid. Larger capacity means less frequent refilling. Many tanks now come in both standard and extended (bubble glass) capacity versions.
Choosing the Right Tank
The right tank depends on your vaping style. MTL vapers should look at the Aspire Nautilus or similar. Sub-ohm vapers should consider the GeekVape Zeus or Eleaf Melo series. Contact us at [email protected] with your mod and vaping preferences and we'll make a specific recommendation.
